Taiji is about natural movement and feel, with this in mind a cursory glance at many western self appointed sifu's, and you will see the ridiculous range of footwear from army type leather boots, to Hi-tec type hiking boots or shoes to brand name running and athletic shoes with all the accompanying air soles , orthotics and wonders.
They may, no doubt be comfortable, and in some instances very stabilizing, but are they good for Taiji Quan, in essence and put simply and emphatically; NO!
You may ask how could 100 years of modern footwear development not be superior to simple cotton kung fu slippers or Chinese thin rubber soled Feiyue's.

  1. Because they shield and protect the feet from the ground and earth, in taiji an integral aspect of learning is to find root, through grounding, and we are  assuming that nearly everyone avoids practicing on sharp gravel, or heavily thorn littered earth, if this is the case, what are you protected your feet for, to numb feeling and sensation.
  2. One of the most prevalent symptoms of modern day stress and obesity related illnesses, is flat feet, or more exactly, over-pronated feet and its related symptom anterior pelvic tilt. These problems are exacerbated by modern sports and orthopedic  footwear designed to remedy its cause. By shielding and protecting the feet from the environment one can never intuitively learn the correct way to stand and walk when you are artificially supported. MBT shoes may be great for getting the feel of the the best way to walk and to exercise leg muscles, but they are never going to remedy over-pronation, but at least they have some good use, most expensive brand name sporting shoes are not only floating on air but they are about as useful as a mouthful of hot air, for learning to walk properly, improving posture. With these shoes you tend to carelessly strike the ground with the feet and often heel strike which can lead to Plantar Fasciitis not stop it, they are like encapsulating your feet in clogs  stopping you from experiencing walking and movement.
